Roger Federer has beaten Robin Soderling at the U.S. Open tennis to reach a 22nd consecutive Grand Slam semifinal.
Federer improved to 12-0 against the 12th-seeded Soderling by winning 6-0, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6) Wednesday night.
Federer has won 39 consecutive matches at the American Grand Slam tournament, where he is trying to become the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win six titles in a row.
In Saturday’s semifinals, Federer will play No. 4 Novak Djokovic. Federer beat Djokovic in the 2007 final and 2008 semifinals at Flushing Meadows.
Federer last failed to reach the semifinals at a major tournament when he lost in the third round of the 2004 French Open. No other man ever had a Grand Slam semifinal streak longer than 10.
Melanie Oudin's surprising story ended Wednesday night with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to No. 9-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
With impressive court coverage and solid groundstrokes, the 5-foot-6 height Oudin knocked off four more established players—including three-time major champion Maria Sharapova and Beijing Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva—to become the youngest quarterfinalist at Flushing Meadows since Serena Williams in 1999.
Making the tale even better: Oudin’s last three victories each came after she dropped the first set. Plus, there was her wide-eyed, age-appropriate attitude: Everything was “cool” and “awesome,” including meeting Roger Federer for the first time and finally getting to shake hands with Sharapova— only after beating her, of course.
Stadium security was bulked up for Wednesday night’s matches at the U.S. Open, a day after a man was arrested for running onto the court to kiss Rafael Nadal.
The total number of on-court private security personnel—guards and supervisors—was being increased from six to nine because of what happened Tuesday night.
Prosecutors said Noam U. Aorta of New York City dashed out of the stands at Arthur Ashe Stadium after Nadal’s fourth-round win, then hugged and kissed the Spanish star as he was changing shirts on the sideline.
Aorta will be charged with trespassing and faces possible jail time if convicted, prosecutors said.
“There was a breakdown,” U.S. Open spokesman Chris Widmaier said.
Nadal, for his part, laughed off the episode, saying: “For me, it wasn’t a problem. The guy was really nice. He said, ‘I love you,’ and he kissed me.”
District Attorney Richard Brown, however, called it “particularly disturbing” because Aorta made physical contact with Nadal. Brown noted that Monica Seles was stabbed in the back in 1993 by a spectator on a tennis court in Hamburg, Germany.
Aorta, 23, of Queens, will be charged with third-degree criminal trespass and interfering with a professional sporting event, prosecutors said. If convicted, he faces a maximum one year in jail and $5,000 in fines.
Attorney information for Aorta wasn’t immediately available.

Day Four Action - US Open Tennis Results
American teenager Melanie Oudin (pronounced as oo-DAN) has upset No. 4-seeded Elena Dementieva in the second round of the U.S. Open tennis. The crowd went gaga over Oudin eventhough she is less known compare to Dementieva and most of them actually bought US Open tennis tickets to see Dementieva.
The 70th-ranked Oudin, of Marietta, Ga., came back to stun Dementieva 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 Thursday in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Dementieva was the 2004 runner-up at the U.S. Open and French Open and won the singles gold medal at the Beijing Olympics last year.
The 17-year-old Oudin, meanwhile, never had won a U.S. Open match until this week. She never had won a Grand Slam match until reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon this year.
Now Oudin will face three-time major tennis champion Maria Sharapova in the third round.
Top-seeded Dinara Safina has overcome 15 double-faults to pull off another comeback victory over a low-ranked opponent at the U.S. Open.
Beset by shaky nerves and poor play, Safina managed to hold on to beat 67th-ranked Kristina Barrois of Germany 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 Thursday in the second round.
This comes after Safina barely avoided becoming the first No. 1-seeded woman to lose in the U.S. Open’s first round. She had 11 double-faults and 48 unforced errors in that match, a three-set win over 167th-ranked Olivia Rogowska.
Safina needed more than two hours to get through each match so far.
For so many years the male standard-bearer for U.S. tennis, Andy Roddick is enjoying seeing the success of some other Americans.
Now, though, he’ll have to face one of them.
The 2003 U.S. Open champion pounded 13 aces, didn’t face a break point until the final game and easily eliminated 81st-ranked Marc Gicquel of France 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 Thursday night to reach the third round at Flushing Meadows.
Roddick improved to 4-0 against Gicquel, winning all 11 sets they’ve played.
The fifth-seeded Roddick next will take on 55th-ranked John Isner in an all-American matchup with a berth in the fourth round at stake. The 6-foot-9 Isner beat Marsel Ilhan of Turkey 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (1).
Roddick and Witten competed against each other as kids growing up in Florida. While Roddick has played in five Grand Slam finals and reached No. 1 in the rankings, Witten never had won a tour-level match as a professional until this week.
Maria Sharapova sat in her hotel room most of the day and watched the upsets go down.
It was not the greatest feeling.
“You don’t want to be that person,” she said.
She wasn’t, thanks to a focused effort from the start Thursday night that resulted in a 6-2, 6-1 victory over 17-year-old American Christina McHale.
Next up for the 29th-seeded Russian, a meeting with another 17-year-old American, Melanie Oudin.
Oudin started the upset trend in Arthur Ashe Stadium earlier in the day by defeating No. 4 Elena Dementieva. A few hours later, No. 5 Jelena Jankovic lost on that court, too.
Sharapova has lost a total of six games in two matches, and though she is still working herself into shape after missing nearly 10 months with a shoulder injury, she almost has to be considered a contender for her fourth major title and second at the U.S. Open.
Dementieva and Jankovic were both on her side of the draw, as is No. 1 Dinara Safina, who has looked unimpressive in a pair of three-set victories.
The Williams sisters, meanwhile, are on the other side of the bracket.
But before thinking about that, Sharapova must focus on Oudin, who is ranked 70th, but now has Grand Slam wins over Dementieva and Jankovic on her resume.
They play Saturday, and Oudin could be that rare player who hears more cheers from the crowd than Sharapova, long a fan favorite at Flushing Meadows and everywhere else.
Tennis fans are awating with their tickets reserved to watch more excitement. Here are the results of second day.

US Open Round Two - Results
Serena Williams offered a new, tongue-in-cheek explanation for why she plays so much better at Grand Slam tournaments than other events.
"Maybe it pays more," she said with a smile. "I guess I'm trying to pay off my mortgage."
Defending champion Williams joined her sister in the U.S. Open's third round with a dominating victory Wednesday night, playing pretty close to perfect while beating 51st-ranked Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-1, 6-1 in less than an hour.
Serena Williams is seeking her fourth U.S. Open championship and 12th Grand Slam singles title overall. She's won three of the past four major tournaments - but she hasn't won a single non major tournament in that span.
The American is trying to become the first woman to win consecutive titles at Flushing Meadows since her older sister Venus in 2000-01.
Everyone's been curious about the condition of Rafael Nadal's knees, so it made sense that his first Grand Slam opponent in three months would wonder as well.
Which might explain why Richard Gasquet tried a drop shot deep in the third set of his U.S. Open match against Nadal on Wednesday. Nadal made the long run necessary to get to the ball, and flipped it back over the net, winning the point.
A moment later, as if conspiring with Nadal to show everyone how fit the six-time major champion truly is these days, Gasquet offered up another drop shot.
Nadal got to that one, too.
Starting a bid to win the only Grand Slam title missing from his resume, Nadal encountered no apparent trouble from his much-scrutinized legs in a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Gasquet at Flushing Meadows.
Roger Federer’s winning streak at the U.S. Open tennis chompionship is up to 36 matches. He’ll try for No. 37 against a familiar foe.
The top-seeded tennis ace Federer moved into the third round at Flushing Meadows by beating 65th-ranked Simon Greul of Germany 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 Wednesday night before a night-session record crowd of 24,206 who bought tickets only to see federer.
Next up for Federer: a match against 2001 U.S. Open champion Lleyton Hewitt. The 31st-seeded Hewitt beat Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.
Federer has won 13 consecutive matches against the formerly top-ranked Hewitt, including victories over the Australian in the 2004 final and 2005 semifinals at US open tennis.
Federer is trying to become the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win the American Grand Slam tournament six years in a row. Fans booked all the hotels in Newyork and ready to see FedEX winning US open title for the sixth time in a row. Some of them even bought the tickets for double the rate of it.
The Swiss star—owner of a record 15 Grand Slam singles titles overall— hasn’t lost at the U.S. Open since a fourth-round setback against David Nalbandian in 2003.

Day two action - US Open tennis 2009
Second-seeded Briton tennis star Andy Murray played a patient, steady game to defeat big-hitting Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 7-5 6-3 7-5 in his first-round match.
He entertained his fans who bought US open tickets only to see him. Murray traded baseline blows with 95th-ranked Gulbis in the first set and the Latvian responded with wild misses and blistering winners and pushed the Scotsman to five set points before finally succumbing to a service break in the 12th game.
Murray, runner-up last year to Roger Federer in his first grand slam final, then varied his attack by mixing in forays to the net and took advantage of mounting mistakes from Gulbis, who had 51 unforced errors, 30 more than Murray.
Maria Sharapova made a stylish return to the U.S. Open when she walloped Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 6-0 to reach the second round Tuesday.
Wearing a black outfit criss-crossed with silver strapping, which she described as being “inspired by the architecture of New York,” the Russian was in sparkling form under floodlights and gave Pironkova a dressing down in 73 minutes. She too doesnt disappointed her fans as many bought tickets only see their diva.
A year after skipping the tournament to undergo rehabilitation on her injured shoulder in Arizona, Sharapova was delighted to be back on the stage where she lifted the famed silver cup in 2006.
Seventh-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France has breezed into the U.S. Open’s second round by beating 18-year-old Chase Buchanan of the United States 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.
Tsonga was the runner-up at the 2008 Australian Open. The U.S. Open is the only Grand Slam tournament at which he’s never reached at least the fourth round. US open tennis 2009 is getting more interesting day by day. Are u ready with the tickets and reserved the hotel rooms? Below is the second day round one results.

US Open Tennis 2009 - Results - Day 1
Clijsters comeback lights up Day One
Kim Clijsters posted a triumphant return to the US Open tennis on Monday, four years after being crowned queen of New York.
The 26-year-old former world number one, who only returned to competitive tennis at the start of the month after more than two years of retirement, hammered Ukraine’s Viktoriya Kutuzova 6-1, 6-1 in just 58 minutes.
It was another clear demonstration that she has lost little of the power and talent that took her to the top of the world rankings and her unseeded category will make her a dangerous floater in the bottom half of the draw.
Clijsters was given the honour of playing the opening match on the Arthur Ashe Stadium central court, her first appearance at Flushing Meadows since she defeated Mary Pierce in straight sets in the 2005 final. She was unable to defend her title the following year due to injury and then retired from the game in May, 2007, to marry and have a baby, only returning to action earlier this month. The Belgian got off to a storming start by winning the first seven points against her 21-year-old opponent. That set the tone and she totally dominated the east European who once was touted as a potential top tenner.
Clijsters, who hit 17 winners and was 70 percent on her first serve, won the last eight points of the match against a demoralised opponent to smoothly move into the second round. “It was nice to come out here on centre court and open the tournament, as I didn't get to do so as defending champion a few years ago,” said Clijsters. “I’m glad I won in two sets without wasting too much energy. I had a few butterflies, more than I normally do.” It was a complete entertainment for the US open tennis fans who bought tickets for this match.More over online streaming of this match was reportedly high too.
The win was the sixth for Clijsters against two losses since she launched her comeback and moved her forward to a potential second round clash against French 14th seed Marion Bartoli, whom she beat in straight sets in her first match back in Cincinnati.
Also through early on the first day was Belarussian eighth seed Victoria Azarenka, who defeated Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania by an identical 6-1, 6-1 score, and Polish 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who ousted Patria Mayr of Austria 6-1- 6-2.
It was a far tougher opener for Australia’s 15th seed Samantha Stosur, who was taken all the way by 34-yearold Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama before winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The French Open semifinalist started slowly in the first two sets, hitting back to win the first but dropping the second against an opponent who was playing in her 16th consecutive US Open draw.
Stosur regained control of the match early in the third set, breaking Sugiyama’s serve in the fourth game. But Sugiyama levelled it at 3-3. Games went with serve after that until the 10th game when Sugiyama hit a backhand long on the third match point for the Australian.
It was a welcome win from Stosur, who will next play US youngster Vania King, who was 2-1 up in the opening set against Anastasiya Yakimova when the Belarussian retired. Day 2 US Open tennis tickets sold like hot cakes. Below is the day1 (Round 1) mens and women's result.
