American teenager Melanie Oudin (pronounced as oo-DAN) has upset No. 4-seeded Elena Dementieva in the second round of the U.S. Open tennis. The crowd went gaga over Oudin eventhough she is less known compare to Dementieva and most of them actually bought US Open tennis tickets to see Dementieva.
The 70th-ranked Oudin, of Marietta, Ga., came back to stun Dementieva 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 Thursday in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Dementieva was the 2004 runner-up at the U.S. Open and French Open and won the singles gold medal at the Beijing Olympics last year.
The 17-year-old Oudin, meanwhile, never had won a U.S. Open match until this week. She never had won a Grand Slam match until reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon this year.
Now Oudin will face three-time major tennis champion Maria Sharapova in the third round.
Top-seeded Dinara Safina has overcome 15 double-faults to pull off another comeback victory over a low-ranked opponent at the U.S. Open.
Beset by shaky nerves and poor play, Safina managed to hold on to beat 67th-ranked Kristina Barrois of Germany 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 Thursday in the second round.
This comes after Safina barely avoided becoming the first No. 1-seeded woman to lose in the U.S. Open’s first round. She had 11 double-faults and 48 unforced errors in that match, a three-set win over 167th-ranked Olivia Rogowska.
Safina needed more than two hours to get through each match so far.
For so many years the male standard-bearer for U.S. tennis, Andy Roddick is enjoying seeing the success of some other Americans.
Now, though, he’ll have to face one of them.
The 2003 U.S. Open champion pounded 13 aces, didn’t face a break point until the final game and easily eliminated 81st-ranked Marc Gicquel of France 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 Thursday night to reach the third round at Flushing Meadows.
Roddick improved to 4-0 against Gicquel, winning all 11 sets they’ve played.
The fifth-seeded Roddick next will take on 55th-ranked John Isner in an all-American matchup with a berth in the fourth round at stake. The 6-foot-9 Isner beat Marsel Ilhan of Turkey 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (1).
Roddick and Witten competed against each other as kids growing up in Florida. While Roddick has played in five Grand Slam finals and reached No. 1 in the rankings, Witten never had won a tour-level match as a professional until this week.
Maria Sharapova sat in her hotel room most of the day and watched the upsets go down.
It was not the greatest feeling.
“You don’t want to be that person,” she said.
She wasn’t, thanks to a focused effort from the start Thursday night that resulted in a 6-2, 6-1 victory over 17-year-old American Christina McHale.
Next up for the 29th-seeded Russian, a meeting with another 17-year-old American, Melanie Oudin.
Oudin started the upset trend in Arthur Ashe Stadium earlier in the day by defeating No. 4 Elena Dementieva. A few hours later, No. 5 Jelena Jankovic lost on that court, too.
Sharapova has lost a total of six games in two matches, and though she is still working herself into shape after missing nearly 10 months with a shoulder injury, she almost has to be considered a contender for her fourth major title and second at the U.S. Open.
Dementieva and Jankovic were both on her side of the draw, as is No. 1 Dinara Safina, who has looked unimpressive in a pair of three-set victories.
The Williams sisters, meanwhile, are on the other side of the bracket.
But before thinking about that, Sharapova must focus on Oudin, who is ranked 70th, but now has Grand Slam wins over Dementieva and Jankovic on her resume.
They play Saturday, and Oudin could be that rare player who hears more cheers from the crowd than Sharapova, long a fan favorite at Flushing Meadows and everywhere else.
Tennis fans are awating with their tickets reserved to watch more excitement. Here are the results of second day.
