Second-seeded Briton tennis star Andy Murray played a patient, steady game to defeat big-hitting Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 7-5 6-3 7-5 in his first-round match.
He entertained his fans who bought US open tickets only to see him. Murray traded baseline blows with 95th-ranked Gulbis in the first set and the Latvian responded with wild misses and blistering winners and pushed the Scotsman to five set points before finally succumbing to a service break in the 12th game.
Murray, runner-up last year to Roger Federer in his first grand slam final, then varied his attack by mixing in forays to the net and took advantage of mounting mistakes from Gulbis, who had 51 unforced errors, 30 more than Murray.
Maria Sharapova made a stylish return to the U.S. Open when she walloped Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 6-0 to reach the second round Tuesday.
Wearing a black outfit criss-crossed with silver strapping, which she described as being “inspired by the architecture of New York,” the Russian was in sparkling form under floodlights and gave Pironkova a dressing down in 73 minutes. She too doesnt disappointed her fans as many bought tickets only see their diva.

Seventh-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France has breezed into the U.S. Open’s second round by beating 18-year-old Chase Buchanan of the United States 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.
Tsonga was the runner-up at the 2008 Australian Open. The U.S. Open is the only Grand Slam tournament at which he’s never reached at least the fourth round.
